Filled And TiredMatthew 11:28

I Am Tired In A Way Sleep Does Not Touch

This message is for sleeping perfectly well and waking up tired in a way that has nothing to do with sleep, and having no language for it that does not sound like ingratitude

She sleeps beautifully and she has stopped mentioning it, because it makes the rest of it harder to explain.

Eight hours most nights. Goes off inside ten minutes. Does not wake up in the small hours. She is sixty-eight and she knows perfectly well that half the women she knows would take that arrangement tomorrow.

And she gets up tired.

Not sleepy. She is very clear about the difference and has been for about three years. Sleepy would make sense and sleepy would have a solution.

This is something else, and the nearest she has come to describing it, and she has never said it out loud to anybody, is that something in her has been carrying for a very long time and has not been put down, and that sleep passes over it entirely, the way rain runs off a roof without reaching what is underneath.

She has no word for it.

And that is the actual problem, because a thing with no word cannot be said, and a thing that cannot be said sits in a woman for three years.

Every version she has tried in her own head sounds wrong. Depressed, which she is not, and she has been and knows the difference. Burnt out, which sounds like somebody who was doing something impressive. Fed up, which is not it at all and sounds ungrateful.

And she is not ungrateful. Her life is good. That is the thing she keeps running into: every way of naming this sounds like a complaint about a life she genuinely likes.

And that is you at your own table, or you would not still be reading.

I Am Tired In A Way Sleep Does Not Touch

Two words, and the second one is yours

Let me give you the invitation, and then let me show you the word in it that nobody notices.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28

Two descriptions, not one.

Labor. That is the obvious one. Working, effort, the thing that makes a person tired in the ordinary way. Everybody hears that one and most people stop there.

Heavy laden. That is a different condition entirely, and it is the one you have been unable to name for three years.

Laden is not about effort. A thing that is laden is not working. It is loaded. It is carrying something that has been put on it and not taken off, and it will go on carrying it whether it is moving or standing still, and it does not matter how long it stands still, because standing still is not what a load responds to.

You are the second word in that sentence, and Jesus put it there because labor on its own does not describe everybody. It is written, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). The Holy Spirit is the One who brings that sentence into a kitchen at sixty-eight, and He is not confusing your condition with sleepiness.

Now, the ingratitude, because that is the thing keeping you silent and it is not true.

You are not being ungrateful, and a good life does not make a load lighter. It is written that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18), and there is no clause in it requiring the circumstances to be bad first. The Holy Spirit does not weigh your condition against your blessings and find it unjustified.

That is worth saying twice, because you have been doing exactly that arithmetic for three years and it is not an arithmetic God does.

And here is the thing about the word rest, which is the last part.

He does not say: I will give you sleep. He does not say I will remove the load, and He does not say the labor will stop.

I will give you rest is offered to the laden as a thing He gives rather than a thing they achieve, and it is offered in the same breath as the description of their state. No condition sits between the two halves of that verse.

You are inside an invitation that was addressed to your exact condition and did not ask you to fix it first. It is written, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden (Matthew 11:28), and the word all covers a woman who sleeps eight hours. The Holy Spirit is not asking you to explain yourself before you come.

And I want to say one thing plainly. If this has moved further than what you have described, if there is a flatness in it that has begun to include not wanting to be here, please tell your doctor and tell one person this week. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one human being who knows your name. Naming it to a professional is not a failure of faith and it is not what this page is instead of.

The breakthrough

So sit at the table and let it be what it is.

Nothing is being solved here. This page is not going to tell you to sleep more, because you sleep beautifully, and it is not going to hand you an exercise, because a thing that sleep does not touch is not going to be touched by a technique either.

And nothing is being asked of you. That is not a warm sentence, it is the actual instruction. Open your hands and offer nothing.

You are heavy laden, which is a word Jesus put in a sentence on purpose, and He offers rest to the laden without asking them to be less laden first. It is written, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). The Holy Spirit is the One who dwells in you while you are in this condition, and He has not gone quiet because you have.

You have a word now. Heavy laden.

It is in the Bible, it is His, and it is not a complaint about your life.

Declare this over yourself

Say them with your hands open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by being grateful enough. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Whatever He does with the tiredness is His, and the outcome is His.

  1. Tiredness that sleep does not touch, you are not ingratitude. It is written, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and heavy laden is a second condition that Jesus named separately on purpose. He is in me and I am allowed to be tired.
  2. Three years of arithmetic weighing this against a good life, in the name of Jesus you end at this table. It is written that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit, with no clause requiring the circumstances to be bad first. The Holy Spirit does not weigh my condition against my blessings and find it unjustified.
  3. God, You offer rest to the laden without asking them to be less laden first. It is written that all who labor and are heavy laden may come, and the word all covers a woman who sleeps eight hours. I am carried today, exactly as I am.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
