Filled And TiredPsalm 139:1

I Can Account For Every Hour

This message is for having tracked your own week honestly and found nothing in it that should produce this level of exhaustion, and concluding that an unexplained tiredness must therefore be your own fault

She did it properly, over eleven weeks, because that is what she does.

She tracked it. Not obsessively, and not in a way that made things worse, but honestly: hours of sleep, what she did each day, when the flat patches came, what she had eaten, whether she had been outside, who she had seen.

She has the whole thing. Eleven weeks of it, and it is good data, and she can tell you things about her own life that most people could not tell you about theirs.

And here is the finding.

There is nothing in it.

Her sleep is fine. Her weeks are not overloaded, and she can prove that, because she counted. She sees people. She goes outside. There is no pattern in the flat patches that lines up with anything at all: not the day of the week, not the amount of sleep the night before, not who she has been with.

The exhaustion is real and it is constant and her own data cannot account for one hour of it.

And what she has done with that, being who she is, is the only thing left. If the situation does not explain it, then the variable is the person in the situation. Something in her is producing this. She is not managing something she should be able to manage, or she is deficient in a way the tracking cannot see, and either way it comes back to her.

She has not said that to anybody either, because she can hear what it sounds like, and because she would not accept it as an argument from anybody else.

And that is you with your own spreadsheet, or you would not still be reading.

I Can Account For Every Hour

Somebody has better data than you do

Let me give you the opening of a psalm written by somebody who thought carefully, and notice that it is not a comfort about feelings. It is a claim about knowledge.

O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.Psalm 139:1-2

Searched. That is an investigative word. It is what you have been doing for eleven weeks, and the psalm says it has already been done, thoroughly, by Somebody else.

Known. Completed. Not in progress.

And then the specifics, which are almost comically ordinary: when I sit down, when I rise up. He is not describing God knowing the grand shape of a life. He is describing a knowledge of the small mechanics of a day, which is exactly the register your spreadsheet is in.

You have been searched already, by Somebody whose data is complete. It is written, O Lord, You have searched me and known me (Psalm 139:1). The Holy Spirit is not waiting for your tracking to produce a finding before He knows what is going on in you.

Now let me deal with the inference, because you made it rigorously and it is still wrong.

You reasoned: the situation does not explain it, therefore the variable is me.

That inference is only valid if the situation and the person are the only two possible variables, and they are not. Your tracking measured hours, sleep, food, company and daylight. It did not measure everything, because nothing measures everything, and an eleven week study that finds no correlation has found no correlation. It has not found you.

You are not what is left over when a dataset fails to explain something. It is written that He discerns my thoughts from afar (Psalm 139:2), which puts a category of knowledge in Him that no tracking of hours can reach. The Holy Spirit knows the whole of it and has not concluded what you concluded.

And I want to say a practical thing, plainly, because you are the sort of person who will act on it.

Eleven weeks of constant unexplained exhaustion, with no lifestyle correlation, is worth a doctor. Not because this page can diagnose anything, and it will not try. Because that is what the finding actually points to, and you would tell anybody else in your position exactly that, and it is not a spiritual matter and it does not compete with a word of this.

You are not required to solve this before the indwelling holds. It is written that the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you (Romans 8:11), and dwells is not conditional on a cause being identified. The Holy Spirit is in a woman with eleven weeks of data and no answer.

And say this plainly with me: if the exhaustion has gone somewhere further, if there have been thoughts about not being here, tell a person today and tell your doctor. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line and one human being who knows your name. You would tell somebody else to make that call without hesitating.

The breakthrough

So sit down with the eleven weeks in front of you and let the inference go.

You are not going to be told what it is. This page does not know and will not guess, and a guess dressed as insight is the last thing a person with good data needs.

What goes is the conclusion that you are the remainder.

You have been searched and known by Somebody whose knowledge does not depend on your tracking. It is written, O Lord, You have searched me and known me, You know when I sit down and when I rise up (Psalm 139:1-2). The Holy Spirit holds the complete account of eleven weeks that your spreadsheet could not resolve.

Turn your hands up on your knees. Hold them still. Offer nothing at all, and put the notebook somewhere else while you do it.

You reached the end of what your tools can find.

That is not the same as the end of what there is, and it was never a finding about you.

Declare this over yourself

Say them with your hands open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by explaining yourself. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Whatever He does with the eleven weeks is His, and the outcome is His.

  1. Absence of an explanation, you are not a verdict on me. It is written, O Lord, You have searched me and known me, and searched is an investigative word about work already completed. He is in me and I am allowed to be tired.
  2. Inference that if the situation does not explain it then the variable must be me, in the name of Jesus you are unsound and you are dismissed. It is written that He discerns my thoughts from afar, which is a category of knowledge no tracking of hours can reach. The Holy Spirit knows the whole of it and has not concluded what I concluded.
  3. God, You know when I sit down and when I rise up, which is the same register my spreadsheet is in and a great deal more complete. It is written that Your Spirit dwells in me, and dwelling is not conditional on a cause being identified. I am carried today, exactly as I am.
