She is perfectly good company until about six o'clock and then there is nothing.
That is not self-pity and it is not a figure of speech. She can hold a difficult conversation at work at half past four. She was funny in a meeting on Tuesday and people laughed and it was genuine. If you met her at five you would think she was fine, because at five she is fine.
And she gets in at ten to six and by seven she is answering in single words.
Her husband has stopped asking about her day, which she does not blame him for at all, because for about eight months the answer has been a version of the same shrug and he is not a man who keeps pushing at a door.
Her son is fifteen and comes down at about half eight to get something and she can hear herself being pleasant at him rather than present, and he does not appear to mind, and she minds enormously.
And here is the arithmetic she has done and cannot stop doing.
The people at work get her best hours. Strangers get better than her family does. The two people she would die for get what is left over after everybody who does not matter has had the good part of the day.
And she has not concluded that she is tired. She has concluded that she is a bad wife and a bad mother who is functioning well enough at work that nobody will ever call it.
And that is you at ten to six, or you would not still be reading.

The order is not a ranking
Let me start where you are, because you have made an argument and it is a coherent one and it needs answering rather than soothing.
Your argument is: the good hours go to people who matter less, therefore the allocation reveals what I actually value.
Here is why that does not follow.
An allocation reveals a preference only if it is chosen. Yours is not chosen. You are not deciding at ten to six to have nothing left. The order is set by the clock and by the shape of a working day, and a person's reserves run down in the order that hours arrive, which is not the order of anybody's importance.
If your son were ill at eleven in the morning you would leave. You know you would.
You are not allocating anything, and the order in which a person runs out is not a ranking of the people they love. It is written that He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust (Psalm 103:14), and frame is the word for a structure with limits built into it. The Holy Spirit reads your six o'clock as a limit rather than a preference.
Now the harder half, because you would not trust me if I only made you feel better.
The cost is real. Your husband has stopped asking. Your son is getting pleasant rather than present, and he is fifteen, and you are right that it matters.
I am not going to tell you it does not.
You are carrying a real loss and you are not required to also carry a verdict about your character. It is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and now covers the eight months. The Holy Spirit is not the voice that has been calling you a bad mother at half past eight.
And here is the thing this page will not do, which is the thing you have been braced for.
It will not tell you to reorganize. Not to protect your evenings, not to move the difficult conversations earlier, not to try being present for twenty minutes. Every one of those is a task, and the only place to do it is the exact hour when there is nothing, and handing tasks to a person at seven in the evening is what has been happening to you all year.
You are not being given anything to do about this tonight. It is written that come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28), and no step sits between the two halves of that verse. The Holy Spirit dwells in you at ten to six, in the car, before you have got as far as the door.
And say this plainly with me: if the flatness has gone further, if there have been thoughts of everybody being better off without you, tell your husband tonight and tell your doctor this week. In the United States you can call or text 988 at any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line and one human being who knows your name. Eight months is long enough that this is an ordinary reasonable step and not a dramatic one.
So sit down in the car at ten to six and let this be separated.
Two things are true and only one of them is about your character.
You are running out at six. That is depletion, and depletion runs on a clock, and the clock has never been a ranking.
And there is a real cost at home, and you are allowed to grieve it without also being convicted of it.
You are dwelt in at ten to six and at half past eight and at eleven at night, and none of those hours is evidence about who you are. It is written that the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you (Romans 8:11), and dwells does not fluctuate with what is left. The Holy Spirit is in the woman answering in single words as fully as He was in the woman who was funny on Tuesday.
Turn your hands up on your knees. Hold them still. Offer nothing at all, and do not use the two minutes to plan the evening.
They get what is left. That is true.
It is not what they are worth to you, and everybody in that house except you already knows it.
Declare this over yourself
Say them with your hands open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you rather than earned by having anything left at six. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person. Whatever He does with the evenings is His, and the outcome is His.
- Order in which I run out, you are not a statement about who I love. It is written that He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, and frame is a word for a structure with limits built into it. He is in me and I am allowed to be tired.
- Verdict that I am a bad wife and a bad mother, in the name of Jesus you are put out of this car. It is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and now covers all eight months. The Holy Spirit is not the voice that has been saying that at half past eight.
- God, You say come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and there is no step between the two halves of it. It is written that Your Spirit dwells in me, and dwells does not fluctuate with what is left. I am carried today, exactly as I am.
