The Ignored NudgeJohn 14:26

The Four Seconds After the Thought

This message is for confidence in the small prompting you talk yourself out of within four seconds, without having to prove first that it was Him

The kettle clicks off.

That is the sound. Not a voice, not a feeling in the chest, not the room going still. A cheap plastic kettle reaching temperature and switching itself out with that small dead clunk, and then the kitchen being quieter than it was a second ago.

And in that quiet, a name.

Marianne. A woman she worked beside for two years and has not seen since the office moved. Not a memory of Marianne, not a story about her. Just the name, arriving whole, the way a name does when somebody says it behind you.

Then the four seconds.

She has timed them, more or less, because she has had them so often. Second one: I should message her. Second two: and say what, exactly. Second three: we have not spoken in over a year, she will think it is strange, she will think I want something. Second four: it is probably only because somebody put her name in that group thread on Tuesday and it has been sitting in my head since.

She pours the water. She does not message.

And this is the part that matters, so stay with it. Nothing happened. There was no phone call the next week telling her that Marianne had needed her. There was no cost, no consequence, no dropped stitch in somebody else's life. She simply made tea and went to bed, the way she had after about a hundred of these.

What changed, changed slowly, and it changed on the fridge.

Some time that winter she began writing them down. Not to do anything about them. She put a pen on the windowsill and wrote them on the back of the shopping list, one line each, whatever arrived in the quiet. A name. A neighbor's front door. Somebody's mother.

By the spring there were forty-one.

And one evening she took the list off the fridge and read the whole thing down, and it stopped her, because she was not looking at the content. She was looking at the shape.

Not one of them was frightening. Not one was about her. Not one had an argument in it, or a threat, or a warning, or a demand. Every single line on that page was small, kind, and about somebody else, and there was not one item on the list that would have harmed anybody if she had acted on it.

Forty-one entries with the same handwriting on them, and it was not hers.

That is you, in the four seconds.

There may be no kettle in yours and no fridge. But something small and kind arrives in the quiet, and you have a well-practiced argument you run at it before it can finish, and you have run that argument so many times you no longer notice you are running it. And underneath the argument is one question you cannot answer, which is: how would I ever know it was Him?

The Four Seconds After the Thought

He told you it would sound like remembering

Here is what Jesus said the Holy Spirit would do, and He is very specific about the manner of it.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.John 14:26

Read the second verb, because the second verb is your whole problem and your whole answer at once.

Bring to your remembrance.

He does not say announce. He does not say interrupt, or overwhelm, or arrive in a way that settles the question of its own origin before you have finished the sentence. He says remind. And reminding is the quietest thing one person can do for another. It is a hand on the arm. It uses your own furniture, your own vocabulary, your own way of putting things, because that is what reminding is: something coming back up in you that you would swear you thought of yourself.

So of course it sounds like you. It was always going to sound like you. That is not a defect in the signal and it is not a sign that you are making it up.

You are hearing exactly what Jesus described, in the manner He described it. It is written that the Helper, the Holy Spirit, brings to your remembrance all that I have said to you (John 14:26), and reminding uses your own furniture and your own accent. The Holy Spirit was never going to arrive sounding like somebody else.

Now look at who sends Him and what He is called. The Father sends Him. Jesus calls Him the Helper, the One who comes alongside, and He gives Him to His own as a gift and not as a reward for sensitivity. So the question you have been stuck on for years, whether you are the sort of person who gets to hear anything, was answered before you asked it, and it was not answered on the basis of your record or your temperament.

You have the Helper as a gift and not as a payment for being sensitive enough. It is written that the Father sends the Helper in My name, and He teaches you all things (John 14:26), with the sending done by God and the qualifying never mentioned. The Holy Spirit was given to you on the same terms He was given to everybody.

And here is what you have been doing instead, and it has exhausted you. You have been auditing the content of each single thought, on its own, with no way of checking it, in about four seconds, and calling that discernment.

Look at the shape instead. Look at the whole page.

Because a voice has a character, and character shows over forty-one entries in a way it cannot show over one. Small. Kind. About somebody else. Nothing frightening in it. Nothing that would intrude on a person or corner them or expose them. Nothing that leaves you agitated.

You have a page in front of you with a character on it that a single thought could never show. It is written that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness (Galatians 5:22), which is Scripture describing a signature rather than a single event. The Holy Spirit leaves that signature across forty-one entries.

And that cuts the other way too, and I want to say it plainly. If a thought ever arrives that would frighten somebody, harm somebody, expose somebody, or push its way into a person's life uninvited, that is not this, whatever it seems to be wearing. You put it down and you do not act on it. The Helper does not help you by hurting somebody else.

One more thing, and then we are done with the arguing. The ones you talked yourself out of have not cost anybody anything. Not one. God is not running His care for the people you love through your reaction time, and He is not standing at a distance now because you missed a hundred. He has been in your kitchen for every one of them, patient as anything, saying the next name.

You have not cost anybody anything by missing a hundred of them. It is written that He has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5), with no clause in it about a reaction time. The Holy Spirit has stood in that kitchen through every missed one and has gone on saying the next name.

The breakthrough

Stop putting the thought on trial.

You cannot prove one small prompting from the inside of it. Nobody can, and the trying is what has worn you out, and it is not humility, it is a courtroom you built and then had to sit in every time the kettle clicked.

You are not being asked for certainty. You are being asked to catch one.

So catch the next one. Write it on whatever is near. Not to act on it, not yet and maybe not at all. Simply to stop the four seconds from eating it before you have looked at it.

And nothing here is a technique. There is no method for hearing more, no practice you do correctly, no level you rise to. You are not going to get better at this the way a person gets better at a sport, and if nothing arrives this week that is not a mark against you and it is not a verdict about how close you are to God. He is not measured out according to how well you are receiving Him.

The Helper was given. He speaks the way He said He would speak, which is quietly, in your own accent, about other people.

You are led by Him already, in a manner Jesus fixed in advance. It is written that all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God (Romans 8:14), in the present tense, describing something under way. The Holy Spirit has been leading a person who could not tell that He was.

You are not making it up.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, with the page in front of you. The standing to speak like this is not something you earn by hearing clearly; it is yours in Christ, given rather than achieved, and it holds on a week when you have heard nothing at all. Speak to the mountain and not about it. Your mountain here is not whether God speaks, which you have never really doubted. Your mountain is the four seconds, and it has been swallowing small kind things in your kitchen for years. Speak to that one, and leave the rest with Him, because the outcome is His to hold and never yours to produce.

  1. Four seconds, you do not get to talk me out of it any more. The Word of God says the Holy Spirit is the Helper who brings things back to my remembrance, and a voice that reminds was never going to have to shout to be Him.
  2. Small thought that arrived kindly, you are written down tonight and you are not going on trial. God, You are the One who sends the Helper as a gift, so I stop demanding evidence for a voice I was already promised.
  3. Jesus, You said the Holy Spirit would teach me and remind me, and You do not hand that promise to people who cannot receive it. In Your name I take Him at His word today, and I am not making this up.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
